Few things bring me as much joy as Comedy Bang! Bang! This may sound like an exaggeration, but my life was changed after I discovered Scott Aukerman’s podcast; it opened up a whole new world of comedy and comedians and happiness I never knew existed. The podcast has helped create and anchor the Earwolf podcast network, and has paved the way for other amazing podcasts — like WOMP It Up!, The Andy Daly Podcast Pilot Project, With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus, and more — to find a listener base.
The Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast has also led to the creation of an IFC series of the same name. As a visual medium (rather than a podcast), it’s slightly more limited in the types of characters it can have on the show. But there’s still plenty of wonderfully weird characters to be found, and it opens up a whole new world of possibilities: turning the talk show medium on its head.
Every episode features Scott Aukerman as its host, and Reggie Watts as its bandleader. (Halfway through the show’s fourth season, which we’re in the middle of now, Watts left to join The Late Late Show with James Corden and was replaced by Kid Cudi.) Every episode (with very few exceptions) also features a celebrity guest and a character guest. Looking for a good episode to start with? Just look for episodes with Paul F. Tompkins or Andy Daly, and you’ll be just fine.
I don’t know how long Comedy Bang! Bang! will run on IFC. We’re almost through with its fourth season, and a fifth season has been announced. Scott Aukerman & Co. have produced 80 episodes so far, and 30 more are guaranteed to come. But the show is shuffled around IFC’s schedule, and its third-season DVD set was just postponed/cancelled/????, so who knows? What I do know is that Comedy Bang! Bang! is one of the most perfect pieces of comedy today, and one well worth your time.
